If you are a DETROIT LION FAN...

YOU WILL LOVE THIS POST : )

The Matt Millen era, one of the darkest periods in Detroit sports, is over.

Whether he was fired, left on his own accord or some exit plan was reached mutually, was not immediately revealed, but The Detroit News has confirmed Millen was relieved of his duties late Tuesday night.

The action came two days after Bill Ford Jr., son of owner William Clay Ford, told reporters he would fire Millen if he had the authority.

Millen, who had told reporters as late as Tuesday he would not quit, apparently had a couple long conversations with the elder Ford on Tuesday. He was at the Lions practice facility Wednesday morning and was seen packing up his office.

There was no immediate word on who will take over in the interim, though Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tom Lewand and assistant general manager Martin Mayhew are expected to split Millen's duties.

In his eight years at the helm, Millen, hired by the Lions with no front office experience, posted a miserable 31-84 record. The team is 0-3 this season and has lost 10 of 11 games. The Lions never made the playoffs in his tenure.

He has been roundly criticized for poor draft picks and failed free agent signings. In 2006, radio station WDFN organized a protest march, The Millen Man March, which called for the team to fire Millen immediately. Fire Millen signs were seen at stadiums -- and not just football stadiums -- throughout the country.

The Lions befuddled fans by giving Millen a five-year extension in 2004. There are still some $10 million remaining on that contract.

Millen was an all-pro linebacker and won Super Bowls with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins. He was working as a television analyst when the Lions hired him.

NOW HOPEFULLY WE CAN WIN SOME DAMN GAMES...
